Alerts are extremely important for all users especially anyone who has directories. By selecting to receive alerts you will be informed via email or private message of what changes take place and what you need to do in order to be aware of them and adapt with them. Typically all alerts are important but if you honestly find them annoying at anytime you can disable them but it is not recommended as being in the dark about something is no fun.
